RECENT HISTORICAL SUMMARY OF SANKARAPURI THEKKEDATHU THEKKETHUNDIYIL KUDUMBAYOGAM KUZHIKALA

As is widely known and established, St. Thomas, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ reached the Kerala shore at Kodungallur in AD 52. After his mission work over there, he had travelled southward and arrived at Palayoor (present day Chavakadu). As a result of his work at Palayoor, 32 Bhramin families had accepted Jesus Christ as their Savour and Lord and were baptised by St. Thomas. Of them, Shankarapuri, Pakalomattom, Kalli and Kalikavu were the four prominent families or “Illums”.

In course of time, because of opposition from others, these four families travelled southwards and settled down at Kuravilangadu. Subsequently, by AD 327 a Christian Church was built at Kuravilangadu. After the establishment of this Church, Kalli and Pakalomattom families had moved over and settled towards the north side of the Church; while Shankarapuri and Kalikavu families settled down towards the south side. As such, in course of time, the two families settled on the north side became known as “Vadakkedathu” and the other two families settled on the south side became known as “Thekkedathu”.

As time went on, there had been tremendous increase in the number of family members in those four families and they dispersed to several other locations, yet keeping up their faith and devotion to the Almighty God, Jesus Christ. Accordingly, a few descendents of Shakarapuri Thekkedathu family came down to Edathuva about four centuries ago, around 1600 AD. They had settled on the northern side of Pumpa River at Anaprampal and they were blessed by the Almighty God spiritually as well as economically. The economic well being and the rapid growth in the number of family members again forced them to disperse into different family names. Vettuthottumkal, Maliyil, Maliackal, Kandathiparampil, Peedikayil, Puthenparampil, etc. are some of the branches of Shakarapuri Thekkedathu family, . who had moved over from Kuravilangadu and settled at Edathuva.

As mentioned earlier, Maliyil family is one of the off-shoot branches of Shakarapuri Thekkedathu family. Today, this Malilyil family could be traced out to Anaprampal. On the side of Tiruvalla-Edathuva road, near the Anaprampal Mar Thoma Church, immediately after crossing the bridge, this Maliyil family is still located.

It was from this Maliyil family, our Founding Father Iduculla had moved over his family to Kuzhikala, near Kozhencherry, in Pathanamthitta District, and settled there about 240 years back. Our founding father, Iduculla had bought a large plot of land at Kuzhikala and settled over there and the area became known as “Thekkethundiyil Purayidam”. And in course of time, he came to be known as “Thekkethundiyil” Iduculla. Accordingly, tracing the lien with the original Shankarapuri Family (Illam), our family is known as “Shankarapuri Thekkedathu Thekethundiyil Kundummam”. The founding father Iduculla had moved to Kuzhikala from Edathua Maliyil family known as Shankarapuri Thekkedathu. As such, when Iduculla settled at Kuzhikala he kept the family name as Thekkedathu Thekethundiyil.
